Dr Seuss Day Parade - March 2nd 2012

Today we had a Pre-K Dr. Seuss day Parade what a great idea.
The hallways were lined up with students and teachers.  Parents came to see the parade too.
All you can hear was laughter in the entire school.  And you should have seen the smiles of
each Pre-K student as they walked and waved down the hallway.
Enjoy!
MORE TO COME......

Spring Bulletin Boards

Again...there are so many artistic teachers and students here at Haynes that I must post some of the wonderful work they have done:
Enjoy!

Expressive Art Lesson - Wocket (FEELINGS)

Today's lesson was based on Dr. Seuss's  book:  There is a Wocket in my Pocket.  Today we talked about things that we do that we should not let us control us.  We talked about different feelings:  Sad, Fear, Anger, Happy, and
On the tables the students have a feelings chart and I gave them dry erase markers and the students circled those feeling that we considered sad, happy, angry, etc.
We talked about these feelings and then I read them the book.
After the book was read to them, they each received a small strip of paper and they were to draw their version of a "Wocket".
I created pockets for them.  We had a blast!!!

Expressive Art Lesson - Pride

In todays lesson we used finger paint for the first time.  That was a lot of fun and it turned out really good.
I talked to the children about what "Pride" means and how to be proud of themselves and others.
We also talk about school pride and how to take care of our school, community and home.
The art activity was to create our mascot: A hornet using a paper plate and finger paint.
We talk about how mascots are in professional games and schools and people take pride in using them to represent their schools or teams.  I had a power-point presentation about hornets and then we created our hornets.
I created a large bulletin board in the main hallway - picture not shown yet!!!!
 Enjoy!

Expressive Art Lesson - Bullying

Today's lesson for my 1st and 2nd graders was a combination of a short movie:  Bullies are a Pain in the Brain AND an art activity.
After the movie I had a discussion about what is bullying, how to prevent it, and what to do if you have been bullied or you are a bully.
With the smaller grade levels Pre-K and K I read a book to them and they did the art activity.
The art activity the students did was to create a "snow globe" and in their picture draw or write something about preventing bullying.
Below are some of the pictures some of the students created:

Expressive Art Lesson - How to deal with conflicts

The lesson today was about  CONFLICTS.  We defined what is a conflict and we talked about different types of conflicts.
The students were them given  3 pieces of paper: Small circle, Large circle, and a strip of 1.5" x 6" paper.
They were to create a "snowman" and make sure that this snowman had as many accessories as possible: hat, scraf, arms, face, etc.
It was interesting to see how the students thought it was impossible to do however though their persistance they were able to accomplished the task.
I made sure that they understood that any conflict (problem) that they have in school with another student or adult - that it can be solved - you just can't give up and you have to find ways to use what you have to make things work.
Here are pictures of some of the snowmen.  (I created a large bulleting board display for the entire school to see):

Expressive Art Class! Blue JellyBean Activity

I taught my students about:  Eugene the Emotional Jellybean.  We talked about different feelings.
I focused mostly on:  Happy and Sad.
Then we did 3 activities:
1. Colored Eugene the Blue Jellybean
2. Colored a "sad" face on a large cloud.
3. Colored a rainbow
At the end of the lesson and activity I stapled the cloud over the rainbow and we talked about how
there are sad things that happen to us but when the sadness lifts - a rainbow of happiness follows.

Funny! Funny! Funny!

I enjoy taking a walk through the hallways with my camera and photographing
many of the funny things students make or write.  Enjoy some of them here.

February Bulletin Boards - Hearts Everywhere

Again some awesome February bulletin boards created by the students and their teachers.

Teacher Inservice Day ART ACTIVITY

We the counselors were given the opportunity to be in the rotations during our all day teacher inservice day.  We decided to have our paraprofessionals work on an activity we called "Dot Yourself" where they were to trace the initial of their first or last name and using the eraser part of a pencil and acrylic paint they were to color their letters.  This is what they did.  You have to agree they did a fabulous job.
Enjoy!
