Crayola Crayons to the rescue

After I sketched what I wanted my new office to look like I went and purchased a few items and began to create "fun" looking items to make my office more inviting and colorful.
Thank God for school specials!  Kmart had a box of 24 crayons for 24 cents and of course I need many crayons for my projects so for less than $5 I was able to get all the crayons I needed for the projects that you will see below.

A. Mirrors - 2 Purchased from IKEA; 4 crayon boxes; hot glue gun.
        Completed project:

B. Clock - Purchased from Wal-Mart; 1 crayon box; hot glue gun.

C. Tissue Box - Purchased from Target; 4 crayon boxes; hot glue gun.
        Completed project:

D. Canvas - Purchased from Hobby Lobby; 3 crayon boxes; hot glue gun; heat gun; black fabric paint; painters tape.
          Completed project:

E. My Husband's Idea - Purchased from Lowes some wooden-thin border and spray paint; sandpaper; foam board; 3 crayon boxes; hot glue gun; X-acto knife; computer paper.

Measured the wall and got an idea on how much space the letters were going to take before the wood - for the frames - was cut.

        Completed project:

F. My Husband's Idea - Purchased the "R" from Jo-Ann; the crayon paper wrappers left from the previous activity listed above; paint brush; mod-podge.

G. My Husband's Idea - Basket purchased from a yard sale; 2.5 boxes of crayon; hot glue gun

H.  This item was purchased in a county fair back in 1994.  I have changed the crayons because the ones that came with the frame were faded and no Crayola Crayon...which are my favorite crayons.  I have also personalize it.

I am so glad that everything worked out and it looks great.  I have received many compliments.  Most importantly....no more crayons on my craft table at home. :)

My Office

After I saw my new office, I began to make plans on how to decorate it.  The first thing I had to do was to bring all the boxes that I had at home to school.

Then I had to plan and sketch what I wanted my office to look like.  You might think that this is a silly thing to do, but you see, I want my office to be kid friendly.  I want to be able to greet the parents and teachers of course and make them feel welcome but I wanted to make sure that I have space and all the necessary equipment to have "play therapy".  I want my PreK thru 2nd grade students to feel that they can trust me and be in a safe and friendly environment.

My next blog is going to show you all the things I made to decorate my office. Enjoy!

New School, Office, and Classroom

I am so excited to start the new school year, 2011-2012, opening a brand new school.  The moment I found out that I was going to a new school, words could not describe the excitement I experienced.

You see, last school year I was a counselor at two different elementary schools and it was so difficult to built a rapport with the staff and students.  It was also my first year as an elementary school counselor after being a middle and high school counselor for 6 years.  Many times my office was my car because I did not have a place where I could save many of the things I needed.  It was an extremely difficult year but I did learn a lot.  The two schools that I had the privilage to work at were both exemplary schools and even though I did not have a "mentor" counselor to help me, I learned a lot from the different things that were done through the school by the different teachers.  But enough of the past, let's get to the new school, office, and classroom.

New School:
Here are some pictures of the inside of the new school.  It is two-stories high and it has the latest technology through out the building.

My New Office:
With built-in desk and lots of cabinets, I have storage for all of my things.  Love the color.

The Classroom:
Our principal wants us, the counselors, to incorporate Art with the counseling lessons.  The moment he suggested that to us our faces lite up with excitement and we began to plan and come up with ideas.

This blog is going to show you my lessons during this school year and what Art activities I used.  Some of the activities and lessons will be taken from other professional counselors who have wonderful ideas and many are going to be my ideas.  Enjoy!
